Led by the defense, the Lee women's soccer team advanced to the semifinal round of the Gulf South Conference playoff with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over visiting Christian Brothers University on Sunday afternoon that was played at the new Lee's Multi-Sports Complex.
The Lady Flames will wait for the outcome of the Montevallo-Delta State winner for their next opponent. "Overall, I was pleased with how it went today and now we will wait and see who we face next," commented Lee Coach Chris Hennessey.
Paced by defenders Caitlin Dickson, Katie Dirkse and midfielders Anna Lanter and Ruth Edrington, the Lady Flames held the Lady Buccaneers to just three shots on goal. Those shots were turned away by Lee keeper Jacqueline Burns, who played the entire 90 minutes in goal.
The only goal of the contest came at the 25:16 mark of the first half. Edrington received a nice-played ball by Ellie Crisler and quickly rammed it into the back of the net. Overall, the Lady Flames had 17 shots but were able to place only four on goal.
The visiting Lady Bucs were limited to only seven shots overall by the ever-present Lee defense. Christian Brothers had an opportunity to tie the contest early in the second half when the Lady Flames were charged with a foul in the box, but the penalty kick by the Lady Bucs sailed directly over the goal. Lee's defenders and midfielders were in charge the rest of the way.
Lee was awarded nine corner kicks and Christian Brothers four. Burns had three saves while the Lady Bucs' Riley Chafin also had three.
"I'm always pleased to get the win. At this stage, every team is good," concluded Coach Hennessey. "Christian Brothers is well coached and historically it has always been a very tight game between us."
