Flames Tennis Defeat Christian Brothers 6-1

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Lee University men's tennis team swept the singles competition to defeat Christian Brothers University 6-1 Monday afternoon in a Gulf South Conference matchup at the Eldon Roark Tennis Center.

The Flames (7-4, 2-3 GSC) claimed just one of the three doubles matches as the Bucs (5-7, 1-6 GSC) grabbed an early 1-0 lead. Paul Chabaud and Javier Flores defeated Bruno Medeiros and Antonio Pons 6-2. Jesus Garcia and Cristian Pons posted a 6-1 win over Victor Fantaziu and Philip Johnston at the third spot to even the doubles score at 1-1.

Atilio Flores and Andres Calzacorta were 6-4 winners over Daniel Prata and Jordi Dasi at No. 2 doubles to secure the doubles point.

"Solid win for the guys," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "We didn't get the start we wanted in doubles. Christian Brothers came out and played pretty energetic tennis and put us back on our heels a little bit. The guys did a nice job recovering."

Cristian Pons evened the team score at 1-1 with a 6-3, 6-0 takedown of Javier Flores at No. 4 singles. Nico Ramirez gave the Flames the lead with a three-set win over Atilio Flores. Ramirez won the first and third sets by 6-1 margins and dropped the second set 6-3.

Dasi posted another three-set win against Calzacorta at No. 3 singles. After losing the opening set 6-2, Dasi won the second and third sets by the same 6-2 score. Antonio Pons clinched the team victory with 6-1 and 6-3 set scores over Johnston at No. 5 singles.

Garcia continued the Lee momentum with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Chabaud at the top position. Diego Garcia supplied the final team score and completed the singles sweep with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Carlson Bennage at No. 6 singles.

"Cristian played some really solid singles and got us a big point there. Nico and Jordi both had to battle hard to win in three sets. Pretty pleased overall with the guys. Just need to keep getting better match by match and get ready for Delta State on Friday," Hynes added.

The Flames return to the DeVos Tennis Center on Friday, April 2, to take on Delta State University. The GSC match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. EDT.
