Lady Flames Win 4-3 At Christian Brothers

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Lee University women's tennis team defeated Christian Brothers University 4-3 Monday afternoon in a Gulf South Conference matchup at the Eldon Roark Tennis Center.

The Lady Flames (6-4, 3-3 GSC) garnered the doubles point after winning two of the three matches. Micaela Belen Maiz and Larissa Wieser beat Gabriela Marin and Nellina Wooten 6-1 at No. 2 doubles. Raquel Amaro and Esther Guemes evened doubles at 1-1 with a 6-3 win over Matina Ujdur and Lisa Kirr at No. 1 doubles.

Carley Sickinger and Sierra Donaldson beat Laura Brazuelo and Eva Garcia 6-3 to secure the doubles point for the Lady Flames.

"Really tough win," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "In the Gulf South there are no easy matches. Christian Brothers are much improved this year and they gave us everything we could handle. Give our girls credit, they fought all day. The match kind of see-sawed and we set a great tone with the doubles point."

Christian Brothers (10-3, 5-3 GSC) posted wins in the first two completed singles matches to take a 2-1 lead. Amaro beat Kirr 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Guemes held off Belen Maiz 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.

Ujdur outlasted Marin 6-4 and 7-5 to even the team score at 2-2. Sickinger followed with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Brazuelo at No. 4 singles to regain the lead and put Lee within one point of winning the team match.

Wooten held off Hayden Smith 7-5, 6-4 to tie the match for the third time and leave the No. 5 singles match as the decider. Donaldson defeated Garcia 6-4 and 7-5 to clinch the Lee victory.

"I'm proud of this team to be able to come down here and get a tough road win. Sierra did a great job staying steady and sticking it out in the deciding match. I'm looking forward to getting ready for Delta State now," added Hynes.

The Lady Flames return to the DeVos Tennis Center on Friday, April 2, to take on Delta State University. The GSC match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. EDT.
