Weimer's Late Goal Gives Lady Flames 2-1 Win Over West Georgia

Lauren Weimer scored with just over four minutes remaining to give the Lee University women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over West Georgia Friday evening at the Lee Multi-Sport Complex.

The Lady Flames (5-0-1, 2-0-1 GSC) opened the scoring with a penalty kick goal by Kelsey Yoder. Yoder's fifth goal of the season came in the 42nd minute to give Lee a 1-0 lead after the first 45 minutes.

"It's been a disruptive few days with game cancelations and not having a full team in training, but the important thing is that we got the win," said Lee head coach Chris Hennessey. "I didn't think the performance matched the level this team is capable of, but we had some players step up in key moments of the game to get us over the line."

West Georgia (2-2, 1-2 GSC) tallied the equalizer a little over 10 minutes into the second half. Jazmine Santiago posted her third goal of the season off an assist by Sadie Prince.

Both teams had opportunities to break the tie with neither succeeding until Weimer collected a pass from Julia Kaset and blasted a shot past the UWG keeper win the game-winner with 4:09 left on the clock.

West Georgia held a slight 12-11 advantage in shots and put seven on goal to five for the Lady Flames.  Lee was awarded seven corner kicks, while West Georgia had two.

"Fair play to West Georgia who played well today and had some chances themselves to get a result out of the game. We now have to find our rhythm again quickly as we head down the home stretch," added Hennessey.

Jackie Burns earned her third win in goal. She gave up one goal and registered six saves in 90 minutes of work. Chanceley Book was credited with three saves in the loss.

"It's imperative that we have right mindset going into another battle Sunday against Shorter," concluded Hennessey.

The Lady Flames played their final home game of the regular season and honored senior Devin Healy prior to kickoff. Lee is scheduled to play at Shorter University at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
