ROME, Ga. - Fabrizio Scimo scored the game winner in the 85th minute to give the Lee men's soccer team its first win of the Spring Season with a 2-1 win at Shorter on Sunday afternoon.
The Flames overcame a very early goal deficit after the Hawks got started quickly with a score just 1:06 into the match on a strike by Hernan Saldana. Lee fired back quickly finding the equalizer in the fifth minute on a goal by Borja Gaspar. Gaspar scored the first goal of the season for the Flames with an assist from Collin Lewis.
The Lee offense took just four shots in the match but made the most of its opportunity with two scores. Davide Maiello and Mattia Maiello led Shorter with four shots each. Overall the home team outshot the Flames, 10-4 in total shots and 5-2 in shots on goal.
Freshman Roel Martinez got his first start in net for the Flames and earned the victory as he allowed just the one goal early in the match but settled in to keep the Hawks off the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest. Martinez finished with four saves. Shorter's Matthew Shorrocks allowed two goals and did not record a save.
The combination Sam Keener and Martinez have allowed just two goals in 400 minutes of work.
The Flames will wrap up GSC Pool B Play on Friday as they host Montevallo on Friday at 5 p.m. from Lee's new Multi-Sport Complex. Â
