MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Lee University men's tennis team had its season come to an end with a 4-1 loss to Delta State University in the Gulf South Conference Championship Quarterfinal round Thursday afternoon at the O'Connor Tennis Center.
The Flames complete their season at 9-7, while the 10
th-ranked Statesmen (15-3) advance to face No. 2 seed West Florida in the semifinal round.
Delta State grabbed an early advantage after the No. 8 doubles team of Trey Seymour and Emile Le Terrier defeated the 19
th-ranked doubles team of Bruno Medeiros and Antonio Pons 6-3. Jesus Garcia and Cristian Pons took down Hugo Stroppiana and Come Bracaval 6-4 at No. 2 doubles to keep the Flames alive for the doubles point. Mason Vice and Leo De Sousa outlasted Daniel Prata and Jordi Dasi 7-5 to earn the doubles point for DSU.
Seymour beat Antonio Pons 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 singles and del Arco was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Diego Garcia at No. 6 singles to put the Statesmen one point from securing the team win.
Cristian Pons put an end to DSU's shutout bid with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Bracaval at the fourth position.
Stroppiana completed the Delta State victory with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Nico Ramirez at No. 2 singles.
"We had some chances in doubles," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "After that they outplayed us. Cristian was very solid and that was a good way for him to go out."
The No. 1 and No. 3 singles matches were left unfinished. No. 49 Le Terrier and No. 19 Jesus Garcia were tied 4-4 in the second set after Le Terrier won the first set 6-3. De Sousa had won his first set with Dasi 6-2 and led 4-3 in the second.
