MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Lee University women's tennis team had its season come to an end with a 4-1 loss to Mississippi College in the Gulf South Conference Championship Quarterfinal round Thursday afternoon at the O'Connor Tennis Center.
The Lady Flames complete their season at 9-6, while the Choctaws (9-6) advance to face No. 2 seed West Florida in the semifinal round.
"Probably not our best performance, but full credit to Mississippi College," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "We just struggled to grab any sort of momentum today."
Mississippi College grabbed the early lead. Kennedy Rodriguez and Alisa Morozova defeated Carley Sickinger and Sierra Donaldson 6-3 at No. 3 doubles. Ely Alas and Fernanda Cota secured the doubles point with a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles against Matina Ujdur and Micaela Belen Maiz. The No. 2 doubles match was left unfinished with Lisa Kirr and Larissa Wieser leading Paulina Cota and Maria Rodriguez 5-4.
Ujdur evened the team score with a win at No. 3 singles. Ujdur won the opening set 6-3 before Morozova retired.
Paulina Cota downed Kirr 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles to regain the lead for MC. Maria Rodriguez was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Donaldson at No. 5 singles and Alas took down Maiz 6-3, 6-4 to clinch the team victory.
The No. 4 and No. 6 singles matches were left unfinished. Sickinger led Fernanda Cota 5-4 in the third set, while Hayden Smith was leading 4-3 in the second set after losing the opening set 6-4.
