CLEVELAND, Mississippi – The 18th-ranked Lee University women's soccer team waited until deep into Sunday afternoon's battle against Delta State University before pulling out a hard-fought 2-1 victory. The Lady Flames improved to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in Gulf South Conference play. The host team fell to 3-5 and 3-1.
"We had to overcome some adverse conditions but found a way to win in what are probably two of the toughest weekend road games in the GSC," explained Coach Chris Hennessey after the win. "I'm especially proud of the girls and how hard they fought to pull out not only the Sunday win but also the victory on Friday. Now we will sit back and relax on the long bus ride home before getting ready for two more conference games at home next weekend."
After a scoreless first half, Delta State broke the ice when Jae'lasha Julien put the Lady Statesmen on top with an unassisted goal in the 62
nd minute. The Lady Flames were not about to be denied and scored the equalizer in the 77
th minute when Katie Wilson delivered a cross into senior forward Lauren Weimer who nailed her shot past Delta keeper Amanda Hilliard.
Weimer picked up another cross in the 85
th minute and found a way to score in the box among several of her teammates and Delta State players. It was a time of celebration for the Lady Flames who found a way to secure the victory in what Coach Hennessey called "one of his teams toughest road trips in the GSC."
Delta State had nine shots and placed five on goal. Lee keeper Jackie Burns had four saves and picked up the win. The Lady Flames attempted 12 shots and placed five on target. Weimer fired a total of three shots while Kelsey Yoder and Ellie Crisler had Lee's other shots. Hilliard took the Delta State loss and registered two saves. Both teams were whistled for eight fouls. Delta received four corner kicks and Lee two.
