Flames End Regular in Style With 3-1 Win Over UAH, Will Host GSC Quarterfinals

Thanks to two second half goals by Shachar Nissim the Lee men's soccer team wrapped up the regular season in style Sunday afternoon with a 3-1 victory over Alabama Huntsville on Sunday afternoon at the Ray Conn Sports Complex.

Nissim's first goal was the epitome of, "the right place at the right time," as a Charger defender was clearing the ball and hit it off the back of Nissim and into the goal to make it, 2-1 Flames in the 76th minute.

Just two minutes later Nissim put the icing on the cake with a goal that was all skill as he fired in the third goal of the game from 25 yards out into the top left corner of the net.

"We battled out here today and it was really important for us to take care of business this weekend at home," said head coach Derek Potteiger. "Shachar is always so active for us and never stops competing and sometimes the game as away of rewarding you for that with a lucky break and we got that on his first goal. His second goal of course is just a showcase to his athletic ability."

Alabama Huntsville trailed 1-0 at the half but found the equalizer in the 64th minute as Shalev Keter rocketed home a free kick from 20 yards out after a questionable foul call.

Mattia Balzano put the Flames on the board as she punched in his third goal of the season off a beautiful cross from Shachar Nissim. The play was set up on a perfectly played long ball by Matias Siems.

"I think we took the confidence from our win Friday and even with tired legs we really fought and got the win today to finish the regular season strong," said midfield sophomore Marc Ehmann. "We really feed off our crowd so we are happy to be able to host a playoff game here and look forward to keeping this momentum going.
Sam Kenner earned the win in goal for the Flames and recorded three saves. Ethan Haworth subbed in starting keeper, Giancarlo Martinez, and was charged with the loss allowing two goals in 10:46 of work. Martinez played 79:14 and had four saves.

Lee held a 15-8 advantage in shots and placed eight on goal. The Chargers put eight on mark.

With the win the Flames move to 9-3-2 on the year and 7-3-1 in the GSC and will secure a home playoff game next Sunday in the GSC Quarterfinals. The loss ends Alabama Huntsville's season at 3-9-4.

"We love playing in front of our home crowd," added Potteiger. "It's really difficult to go on the road and win in the GSC Opening Round so we are excited to get another game in front our great fans."

Potteiger is certainly right about home-field advantage. The Flames are now 11-3-3 at home over the last two seasons.
