Lady Flames Fire Past Spring Hill, 7-0 on Senior Day

On senior day the seniors led the way as the No. 11 Lee women's soccer team scored a dominating 7-0 victory over Spring Hill College on a picture-perfect fall Sunday afternoon at the Ray Conn Sports Complex.

Avery Engels, in her fifth year with the program, got the scoring barrage started early as she headed home a goal of a corner kick from Avery Sides in the fifth minute. It was the first of three assists for the freshman Sides.

In the 10th minute Ellie Crisler scored the first of two goals as she put back a rebound off of her own saved shot to make it 2-0. In the 30th minute freshman Addison Smith struck for the first of her two goals  off a pass from Regan Henkey.

After the halftime break it was more of the same as Kate Dirkse scored on a header off the corner kick of Sides at the 54:46 mark. Senior Sage Sammeli got in the on the fun and found the back of the net for the first time this season as she blasted one home from 25 yards out.

The final two goals were scored by Crisler and Smith. Crisler made Spring Hill pay off a defensive turnover for her GSC-leading 14th goal of the season. Crisler is now just one off the national lead in goals scored. Smith headed home the third goal off a corner by Sides to complete the 7-0 route of the Badgers.

"We are really happy with the result. We challenged our players to make sure we had the same sense urgency and level of play that we did on Friday, and we came out from the start and executed that," said Lee head coach Chris Hennessey. "It was great to see our seniors contribute to the win on Senior Day and then very good play from freshman Avery Sides and Addison Smith. Avery has been playing well and consistent and has great versatility for us and Addison scores goals like that all the time in practice so we trust her to make those plays when they present themselves."

Senior Mollie Wheeler worked the full 90 in net and recorded two saves to get her second win of the year. Lauren Weimer was the fourth senior honored in a special pre-game ceremony, but she is still out with an injury. Weimer is hopeful to return next weekend.

"When describing this group, the one word that comes to mind is consistency. Whether in practice, games, or outside of soccer, you always know what to expect," note Hennessey about his senior class. "This group has had a strong influence on the success of the team over the past few years. Each player has a unique personality that that will leave a lasting impact. A great group that will be missed."

The Lady Flames outshot the Badgers by a staggering 38-2 margin with 21 shots coming on goal. Spring Hill keeper Carlotta Stark allowed all seven goals and registered 14 saves.

Lee improves to 8-1-4 overall and 6-1-2 in the GSC. The Badgers fall to 1-11-1 and 1-8-1 in league play.

The Lady Flames now prepare for an important road showdown with Montevallo on Friday at 6 p.m. Lee is second behind West Florida in the standings with 20 points while the Falcons (9-2-2, 5-2-2) are tied for fifth with 17.
