HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Lee University men's tennis team swept the doubles competition and won five of the six singles contests to hand Lincoln Memorial University a 6-1 loss Sunday afternoon.
The Flames (2-1) made quick work at the first two doubles positions. Bruno Medeiros and Nico Ramirez shut out Thom Hermans and William Jonsson 6-0 at the No. 1 spot, while Jordi Dasi and Diego Garcia beat Fabian Sjokvist and Franco Battaglino 6-1 at No. 2 doubles. Drew Johnston and Wihan Van Der Merwe held off Luca Pavan and Harper Mills 7-5 for the doubles sweep.
"We came out really well in doubles today," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. The guys played with great energy."
Garcia dropped just two points to defeat Sjokvist in straight sets at No. 3 singles. Ramirez dropped his first set to Sebastian Colla with an 8-6 tiebreaker before posting 6-0 scores in the next two sets to claim the No. 1 singles win.
Hermans used tiebreakers in the first and third sets to win in three sets over Dasi at the second position.
For the second consecutive match, Johnston secured the team victory. He recorded matching 6-2 set scores to hand Battaglino a straight-set defeat. After losing 6-4 in the first set against Jonsson,
Medeiros fought back to win in three sets with 6-1 and 6-3 scores in the second and third sets, respectively. Van Der Merwe was a straight-set winner over Pavan at No. 6 singles to finalize the team score.
"We had to work for our wins in singles today, but it's always nice to get a road win," added Hynes.
The Flames are scheduled to take on Tusculum University on Tuesday. The non-conference meeting is set for 2 p.m.
