ROME, Ga. – The Lee University men's tennis team defeated Shorter University 7-0 Monday afternoon at the Walt Attaway Tennis Complex to post its second-straight Gulf South Conference win.
The No. 15 Flames (8-3, 2-2 GSC) won two of three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. Wihan Van Der Merwe and Drew Johnston began doubles action with a 6-3 win over Kiran Devaa Namadevan and Jovan Cirkovic at No. 2 doubles. The 32
nd-ranked doubles team of Nico Ramirez and Bruno Medeiros secured the doubles point with a 6-3 win against Strahinja Radanovic and Jan Kos at No. 1 doubles. Shorter (2-7, 1-5 GSC) avoided the doubles sweep with a 7-6 score at No. 3 doubles. Elijah Hagan and Jacob Gailey outlasted Denis Muratovic and Nicolo Marchetti 7-5 in the tiebreaker.
Medeiros took down Kos 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 singles to push Lee's lead to 2-0. Jordi Dasi was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Cirkovic at the second position. Ramirez, ranked No. 25, overcame a first set tiebreaker loss to win at No. 1 singles and clinch the team victory. Radanovic won the first set tiebreaker 7-5 before Ramirez came back to win the next two sets 6-2 and 6-3.
Van Der Merwe was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Namadevan at No. 4 singles. Johnston beat Hagan 6-0 and 6-3 at the fifth position. Muratovic claimed a 6-2, 6-1 win against Gailey at No. 6 singles.
"It's nice to get a win at Shorter," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "We'll get back and start working toward West Alabama on Friday."
The Flames return to action on Friday with a trip to Livingston, Alabama to challenge the University of West Alabama. First serve is set for 11 a.m. EDT.
