Flames Host Montevallo For Senior Day On Sunday

The No. 20 Lee University men's tennis team recorded a Gulf South Conference win with a 5-2 score over No. 30 Auburn Montgomery Friday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center. The Flames improved to 10-4 overall and 4-3 within conference play, while the Warhawks fell to 8-7 (3-1 GSC).

The No. 40 doubles team of Nico Rodriguez and Bruno Medeiros gave Lee an early advantage with a 6-3 win over No. 35 David Rieme and Muhamad Bedwan. Joao Guariente and Nino Portugal evened the score with a 6-2 defeat of Diego Garcia and Jordi Dasi. Drew Johnston and Wihan Van Der Merwe held off Giovanni Bellio and Jonathan Judy-Hansen 6-4 to secure the doubles point for the Flames.

Ramirez pushed the Lee lead to 2-0 with a win in the battle of ranked opponents at No. 1 singles. Ramirez, ranked No. 32, posted scores of 6-4 and 6-2 to beat No. 41 Rieme.

Bedwan claimed the first set against Dasi 7-5 and was tied at 6-6 in the second set when Dasi retired. Garcia recorded a comeback three-set win over No. 57 Guariente at No. 3 singles. Guariente won the first set 6-4 before Garcia claimed the next two sets 6-4 and 7-5. Bellio pulled AUM within one at 3-2 with 6-3 set scores against Medeiros.

Johnston took down Judly-Hansen 6-0, 6-3 to clinch the team victory. Van Der Merwe supplied the final tally with a three-set win against Portugal. Van Der Merwe lost the first set 6-4 before winning the last two sets by the same 6-4 marks.

"That's a good win for our guys. AUM have been a difficult opponent for us over the years," admitted Lee head coach Patric Hynes.

The Flames return to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. EDT against Montevallo. Prior to the match, the team's two seniors (Medeiros and Jesus Garcia Gil) will be recognized.
