Flames Eliminated From GSC Championship By Valdosta State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The No. 30 Lee University men's tennis team fell 4-0 to No. 8 Valdosta State in the Gulf South Conference Championship Quarterfinal Thursday morning at Lagoon Park.

The Flames (10-7) dropped two of the three doubles matches to trail VSU (13-5) going into singles competition. The No. 1 doubles team of Luca Mack and Rodrigo Carvalho defeated Lee's 38th-ranked team of Nico Ramirez and Bruno Medeiros 6-1. Cameron Trigolos and Christian Wedel secured the doubles point for the Blazers by holding off Drew Johnston and Wihan Van Der Merwe 6-4. The No. 2 doubles match between VSU's Lamar Bartley and Christian Felline and Lee's Jordi Dasi and Diego Garcia was left unfinished with the score knotted at 5-5.

Carvalho, ranked No. 48, recorded a 6-2, 6-1 win over Dasi to open the singles scoring. In a battle of ranked opponents, No. 9 Mack held off No. 34 Ramirez 6-3 and 6-3. Wedel posted scores of 6-4 and 6-4 to defeat Medeiros at the fourth position and clinch the match for Valdosta State.

"We played like we did for every match this season," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. We fought really hard and refused to lie down, credit to Valdosta for the win, they are a legitimate top 10 program. I wish we could continue playing, but it's not to be. Time for us to start looking ahead to the 2022-2023 school year. "

The No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches were left unfinished.
