MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Lee University women's tennis team fell 4-1 to No. 18 Auburn Montgomery in the Gulf South Conference Championship Quarterfinal Thursday afternoon at Lagoon Park.
The Lady Flames (6-11) dropped two of the three doubles matches to trail AUM (16-6) going into singles competition. Nahia Izco and Ane Ibarra gave the Warhawks an early advantage with a 6-2 win over Sierra Donaldson and Ashleigh Simes at No. 2 doubles. Micaela Belen Maiz and Lisa Kirr posted a 6-2 upset win over No. 17 Estefania Garcia and Sofia Navarro. Alba De La Torre and Isabella Pinto outlasted Matina Ujdur and Mirjana Ragastovac 7-5 to secure the doubles point.
In a battle of ranked singles players, No. 55 Navarro defeated No. 43 Simes 6-2, 6-4 to push AUM ahead 2-0. Ana Villalvazo moved the Warhawks within one point of advancing to the semifinal round with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Ujdur.
Belen Maiz ended AUM's shutout bid with a 6-2, 6-4 upset of No. 25 Garcia. De La Torre used a 7-4 tiebreaker in the first set and held on for a 6-4 margin to defeat Donaldson and clinch the team victory.
"We played like the team we have been striving to be all season," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "Our ladies fought really hard today against a good team. I'm proud of our girls for leaving it all on the court today. Sometimes you do that and it doesn't go your way."
The No. 3 and No. 5 singles matches were left unfinished.
