Ehmann's Late Goal Leads Flames Past Buccaners

MEMPHIS, Tenn.- Marc Ehmann scored the game winning goal in the 89th minute for the Lee University Flames as they beat Christian Brothers University 2-1 in a very physical Gulf South Conference matchup on Sunday afternoon. The Flames scored the opening goal of the game before allowing CBU to tie it at 1-1. The Bucs earned three red cards in the contest and the Flames won the game in the 89th minute.
 
 
Coach Derek Potteiger was extremely proud of his squad after the match. "I'm so proud of this team. To go on the road and get 6 points is fantastic in general, but to get the win today at CBU in this environment was exceptional from this group. From top to bottom every player on this team played a role to make this road trip a success and so these are the moments that making coaching special."
 
The Flames have made a habit of scoring early in games this season and did once again on Sunday. Nick Miejboom scored his first goal of the season in the sixth minute off of a header. He was set up on a free kick by Eemali Makela and found the back corner of the net.
 
In a physical first half of action, there were 14 combined fouls and four yellow cards issued. Jeremy Bischoff, Caio Arantes, and Ryan Chouyouti all earned yellow cards in the first half.
 
Sam Keener saved the only shot he faced in the first half.
 
CBU tied the game up early in the second half behind a Ryoya Yoshikawa in the 49th minute. Then a couple of minutes later, Lucho Galizzi earned a red card for the Bucs.
 
Lee turned the pressure up in the 60th minute with shots from Nathaniel Campbell, Shachar Nissim, and Marc Ehmann forcing saves from CBU.
 
The physical play continued into the second half. CBU earned three more yellow cards and three red cards in the second half. The Bucs committed 14 fouls in the game while Lee had 11.
 
The Flames secured the game winning goal in the 89th minute on a blistering shot from Ehmann who found the bottom left corner of the goal.
 
The Flames out shots CBU 12-10 and had and six to four advantage with shots on target.
 
"Coach Carpenter was on all our minds this weekend and so to follow up the moment of silence and reflection for him before the game with a win for him at the end of the game was brilliant. We are praying for him and thinking of him and we know he loves when we win and so we are going to do our best in that way for him," remarked Potteiger.
 
Lee has now won five straight games against the Bucs dating back to 2018.
 
The Flames will return home and will host Mississippi College at the Ray Conn Sports Complex on Friday, September 16 at 7 PM.
