CLEVELAND, Tenn.. –A penalty kick save by Abby Whitcomb helped preserve another shutout for the Lee University women's soccer team as they defeated Valdosta State University 3-0 on Friday night. It was the eighth shutout of the season for the Lady Flames and their sixth in Gulf South Conference play.
The Lady Flames got on the board early in the first half. In the ninth minute, Ashley Eulo crossed the ball into the box to Alaysia Nye. Nye trapped the ball, spun to her right and scored to give Lee the 1-0 lead. It was the team leading ninth goal of the season for Nye and fifth assist for Eulo which also leads the Lady Flames.
Both teams had several chances the rest of the first half, but both goalkeepers made several saves to keep the score at 1-0.
Lee extended their lead in the 57
th minute when Grace Berry was taken down in the penalty box. Kate Dirkse then calmly scored the penalty kick to give the Lady Flames a 2-0 lead. It was the fifth goal of the season for the senior captain. Just over a minute later, Lee was called for a handball in the box and Valdosta State had a penalty kick of their own. Victoria Bahr took the penalty for VSU, but Whitcomb guessed correctly and dove to her left to make the save.
The third and final goal for the Lady Flames came in the 84
th minute, when Eulo received a long pass from Katie Wilson and she then ran 25 yards and slotted the third goal in. The Lee outshot VSU 10-7 including 7-3 in shots on goal.
The Lady Flames will be back in action on Sunday, October 15 at 3 PM at the Ray Conn Sports Complex as they will host the University of West Georgia.
Coach Chris Hennessey's Thoughts:
"We started well in the second half, but VSU finished the stronger team in the second half. Their movement was really good. They are a really organized team. They are as good of a team as we have played this year."
It wasn't a great first half in terms of our standards, but we responded in the second half. We got the second goal which was important. Then Abby made a great save for the penalty!"
"Our backline has been solid all year and they were again tonight. We ask a lot of them and they responded again tonight."
