Flames Secure A Draw With Eagles

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.. –In a tightly contested non-conference matchup, the Lee University men's soccer team fought to a 1-1 draw with Carson Newman University on Monday evening. The Flames scored the opening goal behind a header from Ryan Chouyouti and then settled to a tie after the Eagles scored the equalizer in the 27th minute.

The tie halted a four-game winning streak for Lee and moved their record to 7-3-2 overall, while CNU tied their second straight game and sent their record to 4-4-5 overall.

Lee wasted no time getting on the scoreboard when Chouyouti received a cross from Fabian Navarro and headed it past the Eagles goalkeeper in the second minute. The goal gives Chouyouti his fourth of the season tying him for second most on the Flames along with Marcos Garcia. Navarro earned his sixth assist of the season which leads the Flames and is the leader in the Gulf South Conference.

Carson Newman tied the game in the 27th minute behind a goal from Harry Whitehead. He received a pass from Rhydian Williams to score his fourth goal of the season. The shot had just enough power to get past Jakob Buhrkhul.

Marc Ehmann had several close chances in the second half but three of his shots just went wide right of the goal. Lee outshot Carson Newman 12-10 in the contest, but the Eagles had six shots on goal to the Flames three. Buhrkuhl had five saves in the contest to help preserve the tie.

The Flames will be back in action in the Magnolia State on Friday, October 20 at 4 PM. They will travel to Cleveland, Miss. and take on the Statesmen of Delta State.

Coach Derek Potteiger's Thoughts:

"We will take this result for sure. The game certainly swayed back and forth as there were phases where we had control and phases where Carson Newman were on us; but in the end I thought we fought hard and were maybe unfortunate to not get a late winner."

"It's hard to have 11 days off from games in the middle of the season. You can get healthy and work on some aspects of your identity during that time, but you can lose the feel of competition and I thought the biggest impact of that break was our sloppiness on the ball. We will be more ready on Friday now that we have a rhythm back and our sole focus will be to get a good result at Delta State."
