Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Philip Tang

A late goal leads to a tie for Lee on senior night

CLEVELAND, Tenn. –Despite holding the lead for 40 minutes, a late goal from the Christian Brothers University soccer team forced a tie with the Lee University on senior night at the Ray Conn Sports Complex. Despite the tie, the Flames clinched a spot in the upcoming Gulf South Conference tournament. Lee improved their record to 7-5-3 overall and 4-4-2 in GSC play.

The Flames honored five seniors: Eamon McLaughlin, Marc Ehmann, Matias Siems, David Koch, and Ruben d'Hollosy before the game.

Both teams had multiple chances in the first half but neither could find the back of the net. Eamon McLaughlin and Marc Ehmann each had several shot that went high.

After the halftime break, Lee scored first in the 45th minute. After a mistake from CBU, Noam Stein pounced and crossed the ball into the penalty box to McLaughlin who volleyed it into the back of the net.

After the goal CBU dialed up the pressure, the Flames' goalkeeper Jakob Burhkuhl made three big saves to help keep the lead. McLaughlin also headed a CBU shot off of the line to keep the Flames ahead.

Ryan Chouyouti and Marcos Garcia tried to extend the lead for Lee, but had three or four chances just miss going in. Then in the 87th minute, Marco Osti dribbled to the left side of the penalty area and slipped one past Burhkuhl in goal to tie the game.

Lee outshot CBU 19-15 including 7-5 with shots on target but ended the game with a draw. CBU also forced five corner kicks in the contest and did not allow Lee to attempt one.

The Flames will close out the regular season on Sunday, October 29 at 3:30 PM. They will host Union University at 3:30 PM.

Coach Derek Potteiger's Thoughts:

"We told the team we can do a lot between the penalty boxes but what changes the game is what happens between the 18 yard line and the end lines. We didn't capitalize and take our chances tonight. We kept them in the game and in the GSC when push late teams get opportunities. We had a good performance but we have to take ownership of what happens in the 18s."

"We still have everything to play for. When you get to the playoffs and you are feeling good and confident anything can happen."
