CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Lee University men's tennis team completed a strong week of competition with a 7-0 defeat of King University Sunday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center. The Flames won all three matches played this week to improve to 6-0.
King (2-4) traveled with just four athletes, leaving just two doubles and four singles matches to be decided. Mike and Quinn Groenendijk won by default at No. 3 doubles. Wihan Van Der Merwe and Drew Johnston secured the doubles point with a 6-2 defeat of Alex Sodre and Mat Vieira at the second spot. Nico Ramirez and Francisco Faria completed the doubles sweep with a 6-1 score against Rhys Halcrow and Andre Schiabel.
To begin singles competition, Denis Muratovic and Pedro Salvatori received wins by default to push the Lee lead to 3-0. Johnston clinched the team victory with a win in a three-set battle with Halcrow. Johnston won the opening set 7-6 with a tiebreaker of 9-7. Halcrow forced a third set by winning the second 6-2. Johnston completed the win with a superset win of 10-6.
Jordi Dasi was a 6-1, 6-4 winner at No. 1 singles against Sodre. Quinn Groenendijk dropped just two games to defeat Schiabel 6-2, 6-0. Mike Groenendijk edged Vieira 7-5 in their opening set at No. 4 singles and completed the win with a 6-2 score in the second set.
The Flames will take a little time off before taking on Carson-Newman University on Saturday, February 25. The non-conference match is scheduled for 12 p.m. at the DeVos Tennis Center.
