Flames Take Down Pioneers 5-2

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – The Lee University men's tennis team dropped just one doubles matcha and two singles to claim a 5-2 non-conference victory Wednesday afternoon at Tusculum University. The Flames (3-0) will return home to face King University on Sunday at 1 p.m.

"Our new guys were outstanding today," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "They all led the way in a difficult environment, and it was a really good win for us. We've lost some heartbreakers here the last couple of times at Tusculum, so it was nice to get out of here with a win."

Tusculum (2-1) drew first blood with a win at No. 3 doubles. Rhodri Atkinson and Will Gee won 6-2 against Drew Johnston and Wihan Van Der Merwe. Quinn and Mike Groenendijk evened the score with a 6-4 mark over Nathan Matsuguma and Kenta Kondou. Nico Ramirez and Francisco Faria clinched the doubles point for Lee with a 6-4 decision over Nemanja Subanovic and Marco Jalalian.

Jordi Dasi outlasted Matsuguma to win in two sets. Dasi won the opening set 7-6 following a tiebreaker and finished the win with a 6-4 margin in the second set.

Faria bookended wins in a three-set battle with Subanovic. Faria won his sets 6-4 and 6-1 while dropping the second set 6-2.

Tusculum's Atkinson recovered from a 7-5 loss in the first set to take down Ramirez 6-3 and 6-2 in the next two sets.  Kondou pulled the home team to within one point with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Van Der Merwe at No. 4 singles.

Quinn Groenendijk ended the Tusculum streak with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Ivan Ivars. The win secured the tem victory for Lee.

"Quinn played very well today, super disciplined. It's nice to see a freshman growing and performing under pressure like he did today," added Hynes.

Johnston supplied the final team score with a straight set win over Gee.  Johnston won the opening set 6-0 and used a 7-3 tiebreaker score to win the second 7-6.
