Lady Flames Edge Tusculum 4-3

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – The Lee University women's tennis team won the doubles point and the top half of singles competition to claim a 4-3 non-conference victory Wednesday afternoon at Tusculum University. The Lady Flames (2-0) will return home to face King University on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Ashleigh Simes and Matina Ujdur were 6-1 winners at No. 1 doubles against Leonie Floeth and Tabitha Howe. Micaela Maiz and Maria Duarte secured the doubles point with a 6-0 blanking of Paulina Loretz and Ylva Frafjord Landa. The No. 3 doubles match  was left unfinished with Mirjana Ragastovac and Elizaveta Gnilozubova leading Elodie Baechler and Valentina Loretz 4-2.

"We couldn't have asked for a better start in doubles," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "It helped us to set a tone for the singles matches. Mica did a tremendous job getting us a quick win in singles and keeping the pressure on."

Maiz took down Howe 6-2, 6-0 to open singles competition. Ragastovac held off Loretz to win the No. 3 singles match 6-3 and 6-4.

Simes won her opening set with Floeth 6-2 before dropping the second 7-6 in a tiebreaker. She completed the No. 1 singles win with a 6-2 score in the third set.

Frafjord avoided a shutout for Tusculum (2-1) with a 6-2, 6-0 defeat of Ujdur at the fourth spot. Gnilozubova won the first set with Baechler by a 7-5 tiebreaker score. Baechler evened the score at 1-1 with a 6-4 margin in the second set and completed the comeback with a 10-8 advantage in a superset.

The final team score was supplied by the No. 6 singles match. Duarte fell to Loretz 6-2, 7-5.
