Flames Shut Out Railsplitters To Remain Unbeaten

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Lee University men's tennis team won two doubles contests and swept the singles competition on its way to a 7-0 non-conference win over Lincoln Memorial University Wednesday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center. The Flames remain unbeaten on the year with an 8-0 record, while the Railsplitters dropped to 7-4.

Mike and Quinn Groenendijk opened the doubles action with a 6-1 win over Alexandru Giurea and Harper Mills at the second position. Nico Ramirez and Francisco Faria secured the doubles point for Lee after beating Franco Battaglino and William Jonsson 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. The No. 3 doubles match was left unfinished with the score tied 4-4.

Van Der Merwe pushed Lee ahead 2-0 with 6-1, 6-3 No. 4 singles win against Mills. Quinn Groenendijk beat Florent Geenjaar 6-0 and 6-4 at the fifth position. Faria clinched the team victory with matching 6-4 scores in a straight-set win over Thom Hermans.

Drew Johnston needed a 7-4 tiebreaker to win his opening set with Sebastian Aranzeta and completed the No. 6 singles win with a 6-2 second set score. Ramirez outlasted Giurea 8-6 in a first set tiebreaker and finished the two-set win with a 6-2 score in the second set.

Jordi Dasi completed the Lee shutout with a three-set win at No. 3 singles. Dasi won his first set over Jonsson 6-4 and Jonsson responded with a 6-4 win in the second set. The match was decided by a super set tiebreaker with Dasi earning the win 10-6.

"That was a complete performance today, our guys showed a lot of professionalism," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "Mike and Quinn got us off to a great start in doubles, very aggressive and set a great tone for us. In singles, we had to problem solve on a lot of courts. It's not always about just getting the free cookies, you have to earn them."

The Flames return to action next Tuesday (March 7) in St. Augustine, Florida, with a non-conference match against Flagler College.
