Lady Flames Take Down Carson-Newman 5-2

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Lee University women's tennis team swept the doubles competition and four of the six singles matches to defeat Carson-Newman University in a non-conference meeting Tuesday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center. The Lady Flames improved to 6-0 and the Lady Eagles fell to 0-5 for the season.

Mirjana Ragastovac and Elizaveta Gnilozubova won by default at No. 3 doubles. Ashleigh Simes and Matina Ujdur took down Natasha Forrest and Summer Reeves 6-1 at No. 1 doubles to secure the doubles point. Micaela Maiz and Maria Duarte completed the sweep with a 6-3 win over Mollie Edge and Julia Speiser.

The Lady Flames grabbed a 2-0 lead after Duarte was awarded a default win at No. 6 singles. Ragastovac pushed the Lee advantage to 3-0 with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Speiser at No. 3 singles.

Carson-Newman avoided the shutout with a 7-5, 6-3 win by Forrest against Maiz at No. 2 singles. Anita Chornei cut the C-N deficit to one with a three-set win over Simes at No. 1 singles. Chornei was the opening set 7-5, Simes forced a third set with a 6-2 margin in the second and Chornei claimed the third set 6-3.

Gnilozubova ended the Carson-Newman run and clinched the team victory with a  6-4, 7-5 defeat of Edge at the fifth position. Ujdur held off Reeves in three sets to supply the final team score. Ujdur won the first set 6-2. Reeves and Ujdur split the next two sets by matching 6-4 margins.

"Solid win for our ladies today," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "We've got some things we can get better at, but we did well closing this one out. Matina came up with some big plays at the end of her match and Elizaveta handled the pressure really well."

The Lady Flames are scheduled to return to action on Friday at West Georgia. The GSC contest is set for 2 p.m. at Sunset Hills Country Club in Carrollton, Georgia.
