Flames Complete Unbeaten Weekend With 7-0 Win At CBU

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Lee University men's tennis team completed a perfect weekend with a 7-0 Gulf South Conference (GSC) win over Christian Brothers University. The 14th-ranked Flames improved to 11-2 overall and 4-1 in the GSC, while the Bucs dropped to 4-8, 1-6 GSC.

Mike and Quinn Groenendijk gave Lee an early advantage with a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles over Alban Piranda and Juan Ycaza. Jordi Dasi and Denis Muratovic secured the team point with a 6-2 defeat of Seth Macute and Emilian Zavala. The No. 2 doubles match was left unfinished with the score tied 4-4.

Francisco Faria took down Piranda 6-0 and 6-2 at No. 1 singles to put Lee ahead 2-0. Quinn Groenendijk dropped just one game to win at the fourth position. Dasi clinched the team victory with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Ignacio Mora.

Wihan Van Der Merwe used an 8-6 tiebreaker to win his first set with Ycaza and carried the momentum to a 6-1 margin in the second set. Drew Johnston shut out Jojo Sandoz at No. 5 singles. Mike Groenendijk completed the team shutout with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Zavala at No. 6 singles.

The Flames return home on Wednesday to take on unbeaten and No. 6 Valdosta State University Blazers. The GSC contest is scheduled for 1 p.m. EDT at the DeVos Tennis Center.
