MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Lee University women's tennis team salvaged a weekend split with a 7-0 Gulf South Conference (GSC) win over Christian Brothers University. The 38
th-ranked Flames improved to 8-3 overall and 3-2 in the GSC, while the Lady Bucs dropped to 8-6, 2-6 GSC.
Ashleigh Simes and Matina Ujdur made quick work of Chelsea Dzenga and Ellie Hire to win 6-0 at No. 1 doubles. Elizaveta Gnilozubova and Hayden Smith blanked Viktoria Grigoreva and Gabriela Marin 6-0 to secure the team point for the Lady Flames. The No. 2 doubles contest was left unfinished.
Maria Duarte began singles competition with a 6-3, 6-0 defeat of Hire at the fifth position. Ujdur added to the Lee lead with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles. Micaela Maiz clinched the team victory after beating Dzenga 6-2 and 6-1.
Simes needed three sets to take down Beatriz Costa at the No. 1 slot. Simes held off Costa 7-5 in the first set before falling 6-3 in the second. Simes completed the win with a 10-8 score in the third set.
Gnilozubova edged Marin 6-4 and 7-5 to win at No. 4 singles. Smith completed the Lee shutout with a 6-4, 6-3 win against Grigoreva.
The Lady Flames return home on Wednesday to take on Valdosta State University. The GSC contest is scheduled for 1 p.m. EDT at the DeVos Tennis Center.
