Flames Drop 6-1 Contest At No. 23 AUM

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Lee University men's tennis team fell 6-1 at No. 23 Auburn University Montgomery Friday afternoon at the AUM Tennis Complex. The No. 10 Flames dropped to 12-4 overall and 5-3 in the Gulf South Conference (GSC), while AUM improved to 14-7, 7-2 GSC. With the loss, Lee will settle into the No. 5 seed for next week's GSC Championship.

The Warhawks swept the doubles competition to collect the doubles point. Thibault Jacq and Titouan Le Maout beat Wihan Van Der Merwe and Drew Johnston 6-2 at No. 3 doubles. Muhamad Bedwan and Adrian Contreras doubled-up Mike and Quinn Groenendijk at the second position, while Joao Guariente and Giuseppe Bonaiuti won the same score against Nico Ramirez and Francisco Faria.

Bonaiuti opened singles competition with a 6-0, 6-2 win against Jordi Dasi to push AUM ahead 2-0. Guariente put the home team one point away from the team win with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Ramirez. Le Maout posted AUM's fourth team point after defeating Quinn Groenendijk 6-1 and 6-4.

AUM pushed its advantage to 6-0 following wins at the second and fourth spots. Bedwan won at No. 2 singles 6-3 and 6-2 against Faria. Van Der Merwe pushed Adrian Contreras to three sets. Contreras won the opening set 6-2 and Van Der Merwe claimed the second set 7-6 following a 10-8 tiebreaker. Contreras completed the No. 4 singles win with a 10-6 score in the super set tiebreaker.

Johnston ended the shutout bid with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Jacq at No. 6 singles.

The Flames remain on the road on Saturday with their regular season finale at Montevallo. The GSC contest is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. EDT.
