Lady Flames Edged 4-3 By No. 16 AUM

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Lee University women's tennis team fell 4-3 at No. 16 Auburn University Montgomery Friday afternoon at the AUM Tennis Complex. The No. 38 Lady Flames dropped to 11-4 overall and 6-3 in the Gulf South Conference (GSC), while AUM improved to 17-4, 9-1 GSC.

The Warhawks began doubles competition with a 6-2 win by Nahia Izco and Yakup Pour against Elizaveta Gnilozubova and Hayden Smith. Estefania Garcia and Regina Urbiola held off Matina Ujdur and Ashleigh Simes at No. 1 doubles to secure the doubles point. Maria Duarte and Micaela Maiz avoided the doubles sweep with a 6-4 defeat of Sofia Neri and Ane Ibarra.

Urbiola, ranked No. 57, defeated No. 71 Maiz 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles to extend AUM's lead to 2-0. Ana Villalvazo held off Gnilozubova 7-6 with a 7-3 tiebreaker to open their No. 4 singles match. Villalvazo finished the two-set win with a 6-1 mark in the second set.

Simes ended AUM's shutout bid with a three-set win over Garcia. Garcia won the first set and Simes forced a third set with a 7-5 score in the second. Simes completed the comeback win with a 6-1 third set.

Ibarra claimed a 6-0, 6-2 straight-set win at No. 6 singles against Smith to clinch the team victory for AUM.

Ujdur and Duarte closed the gap in the final team score with a pair of three-set victories. Ujdur came back from a 6-2 first set loss to win the next two sets 6-4 and 6-3. Duarte won her first set with Izco 7-6 and dropped the second set 6-4. Duarte outlasted Izco 11-9 in the super set tiebreaker to post Lee's third point.

The Lady Flames remain on the road on Saturday with their regular season finale at Montevallo. The GSC contest is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. EDT. With a win, Lee will receive the No. 4 seed in next week's GSC Championship. A loss would push the Lady Flames to the No. 5 seed.
