MONTGOMERY, Ala. –Nico Ramirez and Francisco Faria led a furious comeback in men's tennis doubles to help propel a Lee University win over the University of West Alabama on Thursday afternoon. Ramirez and Faria were down 5-2 in #1 doubles and came back to win the set 7-6 to secure the doubles point for the Flames. Lee then swept the Tigers 3-0 in singles matches to win the Gulf South Conference quarterfinal matchup 4-0.
In the other two doubles matchups, Mike and Quinn Groenendijk lost 6-2 while Andrew Johnston and Jordi Dasi won their doubles 6-3.
In singles, Ramirez dispatched Marcel Hornung easily in #1 singles 6-0 | 6-1. In #3 singles, Jordi Dasi also won quickly with a score of 6-2 | 6-2. The third and final win came from Wihan Van Der Merwe who won 6-4 | 6-1.
Faria, Johnston, and Quinn Groenendijk all had their matches go unfinished as the Flames got the winning point from Dasi.
Head Coach Patric Hynes was excited about the rally from the Flames. "Early on we were playing well but could not get a good look in. Credit UWA, they were playing amazing. We stuck in there and came up big in two doubles matches. That point in doubles created a lot of momentum. We then went out on the singles court as kept the foot on the gas. Now we have to get ready for a very good Valdosta State team."
Lee will take on the #1 seed Valdosta State at 3:30 eastern in the semifinals of the GSC tournament.
