MONTGOMERY, Ala. –In a hard-fought battle, the Lee University Lady Flames tennis team fell to the Mississippi College Lady Choctaws 4-1 in the quarterfinals of the Gulf South Conference tennis tournament Thursday morning.
The Lady Flames dominated the doubles portion of the match winning both #1 doubles and #2 doubles while falling in #3 doubles. Ashleigh Simes and Matina Ujdur handily won #1 doubles 6-3.
Micaela Maiz and Maria Duarte had to fight but pulled out on top in #2 doubles 6-4. Hayden Smith and Elizaveta Gnilozubova battled in #3 doubles but fell 6-3.
Then in singles, MC pulled ahead quickly and maintained the lead. Simes fell behind early and could not catch up in #1 single. She lost to Elyangelica Alas 6-2 | 6-2.
Ujdur battled hard in singles #3 with Fernanda Cota but came up just short 6-4 | 7-5. Duarte also fell in singles #5 6-3 | 6-3. Hayden Smith was the final loss in the #6 singles losing 7-5 |6-1. With those two losses, neither Maiz and Gnilozubova finished their matches.
Head Coach Partic Hynes was proud of the effort from the team. "I thought we played a good match. We played excellent doubles point with all three combinations at their best. In singles we fought but it just didn't go our way."
Looking back at the season, Coach Hynes knew this was a special group. "This season was a lot of fun. This group of girls was great to work with. They were unified and didn't complain and it was fun to be with them all year."
With the loss the Lady Flames finished their season with a record of 11-6.
