CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Lee University Women's Tennis team posted a 5-2 win over Cumberland University Thursday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center. The non-conference battle is the lone dual match of the fall schedule.
The Lady Flames (1-0) swept the doubles competition to take an early 1-0 lead. Ashleigh Simes and Maria Penalver made quick work of Ame Van Eijk and Elina Sungatullina by a 6-1 margin. Mirjana Ragastovac and Nicolette Fuhr were 6-2 winners against Lara Esteban and Valeriia Grianna. Kanna Kobayakawa and Vitoria Maximiliano doubled-up Email Nowak and Maria Jose Arbelaez 6-3.
Simes dropped just one game to Kaede Hatano in a straight set win at No. 1 singles. Kobayakawa pushed Lee's advantage to 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles against Van Eijk.
Madeleine Darud ended Lee's shutout hopes with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Fuhr at No. 6 singles.
Penalver posted 6-1 and 6-4 scores to clinch the team victory for the Lady Flames. Maximiliano held off Zugasti Esteban 6-4 and 6-3 at No. 5 singles to push the Lee lead to 5-1.
Nowak's three-set win over Ragastovac at the third position supplied the final team score. Ragastovac won the opening set 6-0 before Nowak used an 8-6 tiebreaker to win the second set 7-6. In the third set, Nowak secured her win with a 10-4 super tiebreaker score.
