Flames Fall Late To Badgers

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Despite fighting back and getting an equalizer, Lee University let one slip past them as Spring Hill scored a late goal to take a 2-1 win over the Flames. The Badgers scored the first goal of the match before Lee tied it. Then on their only shot of the second half, Spring Hill found the back of the net to steal a Gulf South Conference win on Friday evening.

The first 13 minutes was a feeling out period by both teams with one shot a piece. Neither shot was close to being on target. Then just after the 13-minute mark, SHC opened the scoring. Brennan LeBlanc took a pass from Brett Stow and from about 25 yards out shot it to the bottom left corner of the net.

Marcos Garcia had the first good chance in the 20th minute, but his long range shot just went over the top of the cross bar. Lee had one more chance in the 43rd minute of the first half when Farid Chouyouti had a shot from close range, but it was saved by the Badger goalkeeper.

The Flames dialed up the pressure in the second half. Daniel Garvilla had a big opportunity off of a free kick by Marc Ehmann, but his shot hit the right post. A minute later Jesse Thompson had a blast that was pushed over the cross bar. Finally, in the 69th minute the Flames got the equalizer. Daniel Garvilla took a through pass from Jesse Thompson and slotted home his third goal of the season. The tie was short lived as LeBlanc scored his second goal of the game for the Badgers and gave Spring Hill the win. LeBlanc scored on the only shot of the second half for SHC.

Lee outshot SHC 12-4 but could not take advantage. With the loss, Lee fell to 3-4-2 overall and 2-2-1 in GSC play. Meanwhile Spring Hill improved to 3-4-1 overall and 3-1-0 in conference action.

The Flames will be remain at home on Sunday, October 6 at 3:30 PM as they will host the University of West Florida.

Coach Derek Potteiger's Thoughts:

"That is a hard one to swallow for sure since we fought back and got the game tying goal. We were pushing and it felt like we were either going to end in a draw or we would get the win. To give up the goal on their only shot of the half hurts."

"We need to be intentional about putting this behind us and moving forward because you can't hang on to that result when you have another game on Sunday. We will try to recover and get energized for Sunday."
