MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Lee University men's soccer team's playoff hopes took a major blow Friday night with a 1-0 loss to Christian Brothers University at Signaigo Filed. The loss dropped the Flames' record to 3-6-6 and 2-4-4 in the Gulf South Conference with one game remaining on the schedule.
The Flames outshot their hosts16-11 and put six shots on goal to four by the Bucs. The teams fought back-and-forth in a scoreless tie for nearly 80 minutes before CBU's Alexander Blanche placed a shot from 20 yards out in the upper left corner of the goal to record the eventual game-winner.
Jakob Buhrkuhl faced four shots and came away with three saves in the loss. Vicent Sanchis Olmedo recorded six saves to earn the shutout.
The Lee men remain tied for ninth place with Delta State and Alabama Huntsville with 10 points and still have a path to claiming one of the two remaining GSC Championship berths.
Montevallo and West Alabama currently hold the final two playoff spots. Montevallo has recorded 12 points and plays at Delta State on Sunday to complete the regular season. UAH will be home against West Florida, while the Flames play at Union. West Alabama finished its GSC schedule with 11 points.
The Flames' matchup with Union is set for 4:30 pm EST at Smith Memorial Soccer Complex in Jackson, Tennessee.
