No. 14 Flames Take Down Tornado 7-0

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The No. 14 Lee University men's tennis team opened its 2024 season with a 7-0 win at King University Sunday afternoon. The Flames improved to 1-0, while King dropped to 1-3.

Combined with the Lady Flames' win over King, Lee head coach Patric Hynes recorded his 300th coaching victory with 180 of those coming at Lee.

Viktor Yanev and Quinn Groenendijk opened doubles competition with a 6-2 win over Tyler Meade and Mat Vieira. Francisco Faria and Yike Liu secured the doubles point by beating Alex Sodre and Isaac Yang 6-2. Wihan van der Merwe and Jordi Dasi doubled-up Rhys Halcrow and Andre Schiabel 6-3 to complete a sweep of the doubles matches.

The Flames went up 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 win by van der Merwe over Schiabel at No. 2 singles. Faria held off Halcrow to win their opening set 6-4 and claimed the match with a 6-1 margin in the second set. Groenendijk beat Sodre 6-0 and 6-4 to clinch the team win.

Dasi took down Yang 6-1 and 6-2 at No. 4 singles, while Liu won both sets against Meade by 6-1 scores. Yanev defeated Vieira 6-2 in the first set of No. 5 singles and completed the win and the shutout by outlasting Vieira 7-5 in the second set.

The Flames are scheduled to return to action on Saturday, February 10, at Carson-Newman University. The non-conference match is set for a 1 p.m. start.
