Lady Flames Win 7-0 at King University

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Lee University women's tennis team opened its 2024 season with a 7-0 win at King University Sunday afternoon. The Lady Flames moved to 1-0, while King dropped to 0-4.

Combined with the Flames' win over King, Lee head coach Patric Hynes recorded his 300th coaching victory with 180 of those coming at Lee.

The Tornado had just four players, so the Lady Flames needed to win just one of the remaining two doubles contests to earn the doubles point. Maria Penalver Aguilo and Kanna Kobayakawa made quick work of Lilly Belcher and Mireia Mas Ortega 6-0 to secure the 1-0 team lead. Ashleigh Simes and Maria Fernanda Duarte doubled-up Deniz Aytun and Mishka Koricinova 6-3 at No. 1 doubles to post the sweep.

With the default wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, the Lady Flames held a 3-0 lead as singles competition began. Kobayakawa posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles to clinch the team victory.

Simes beat Aytun 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, while Fernanda Duarte beat Mas Ortega by matching 6-1 set scores at the third position. Penalver Aguilo dropped just two games to Koricinova at No. 2 singles on her way to completing the team shutout.

The Lady Flames are scheduled to return to action on Saturday, February 10, at Carson-Newman University. The non-conference match is set for a 1 p.m. start.
