JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Lee University women's tennis team shut out Carson-Newman University 4-0 in a non-conference matchup Sunday afternoon at the Buddy A. Catlett Tennis Complex. The Lady Flames improved to 6-1 overall, while the Eagles fell to 3-5.
Ashleigh Simes and Maria Fernanda Duarte grabbed a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles over Summer Reeves and Natasha Forrest to open doubles competition. Maria Penalver Aguilo and Kanna Kobayakawa beat Suryanshi and Leah McBride 6-4, while Elizaveta Gnilozubova and Hayden Smith recorded another 6-4 doubles win over Sindija Manovska and Julia Speiser for the Lee sweep.
Fernanda Duarte dropped just three games in her straight set defeat of Manovska at No. 4 singles. Smith won both of her sets 6-3 to push the Lee advantage to 3-0. Penalver Aguilo beat Reeves 6-2 and 6-4 to clinch the team victory.
The final three matches were left unfinished. Simes, ranked No. 66, was leading Anita Chornei 2-1 in the first set, while Kobayakawa and Gnilozubova had yet to begin their singles matches.
The Lady Flames travel to Young Harris College on Tuesday for another non-conference match. First serve at the Bob & Gayle Nichols Tennis Complex is set for 4 p.m.
