CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Lee University Men's Tennis team recorded a 7-0 win over Christian Brothers University Monday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center to post its second consecutive shutout. The 27
th-ranked Flames improved to 7-1 overall and 2-1 in the Gulf South Conference, while the Bucs fell to 7-5, 1-4 GSC.
Wihan van der Merwe and Jordi Dasi opened the doubles competition with a 6-2 defeat of Pedro Gomez and Benjamin Hanriot. Mike and Quinn Groenendijk doubled-up Jojo Sandoz and Juan Ycaza 6-3 at No. 2 doubles. Lee's 46
th-ranked doubles team of Francisco Faria and Filipe Krohn posted a 7-3 tiebreaker to win No. 1 doubles 7-6.
Faria was a 6-2, 6-1 winner at No. 1 singles against Ycaza. Dasi edged Hanriot 6-4 and 7-5 to push the Flames ahead 3-0. At No. 2 singles, van der Merwe, ranked No. 67, dropped his first set to Mora 6-3 before fighting back to win the next two sets by the same scores and clinch the team match.
Quinn Groenendijk dropped just one game to beat Miguel Perez Habib at No. 4 singles. Krohn continued the momentum with a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 5 position and Yike Liu completed the shutout by beating Gomez 6-1 and 6-3.
The Flames are scheduled to return to action at Shorter University on Thursday. The GSC match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
