CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Lee University Women's Tennis team improved to 8-1 overall and 3-1 within the Gulf South Conference with a 5-2 win over Christian Brothers University Monday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center.
The Lady Flames claimed two of the three doubles matches and four of the six singles competitions on their way to the home win.
Ashleigh Simes and Maria Fernanda Duarte started doubles with a 6-2 win over Viktoriia Grigoreva and Sofia Zemtsova. Maria Penalver Aguilo and Kanna Kobayakawa posted the same margin against Raheen Taranum and Chelsea Dzenga at No. 2 doubles to secure the doubles point for Lee. Neha Dandu and Valerie Neumann kept CBU (8-7, 2-3 GSC) from being swept with a 6-3 win against Elizaveta Gnilozubova and Mirjana Ragastovac.
Simes dropped just one game to Zemtsova at No. 1 singles to push the Lee lead to 2-0. Kobayakawa beat Dzenga 6-4 and 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Penalver Aguilo took down Grigoreva 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles to clinch the team victory.
Gnilozubova extended Lee's advantage to 5-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Dandu. CBU claimed the final two singles matches to close the gap. Neumann beat Hayden Smith 6-2, 6-3; and Taranum needed three sets to hold off Fernanda Duarte.
The Lady Flames are scheduled to return to action at Shorter University on Thursday. The GSC match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
