Flames Post Second Consecutive Shutout with 7-0 Win at West Alabama

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Lee University Men's Tennis team recorded its second-straight shutout win with a 7-0 defeat of West Alabama Friday afternoon at the Vaughan Tennis Complex. The No. 30 Flames have now posted four shutouts against conference opponents and six overall.

West Alabama (6-11, 4-4 GSC) grabbed the early advantage with a 6-2 win by No. 46 Lucas Hammond and Jacob Tapia at No. 1 doubles against Francisco Faria and Filipe Krohn. Lee (10-2, 5-2 GSC) picked up a 6-3 win by Jordi Dasi and Wihan van der Merwe in the third position against Caden Goldammer and Vilislav Bonev to even the tally. Mike and Quinn Groenendijk beat Wilson Igbinovia and Eita Ishikawa 6-4 to secure the doubles point for the Flames.

Dasi recovered from a 6-4 drop of his opening set to win the next two sets against Ishikawa 6-4 and 6-2 to begin singles competition. Faria did the same against No. 59 Hammond. Hammond won the first set 6-3 before Faria claimed the next two 6-1 and 6-4. The No. 2 singles match between van der Merwe, ranked No. 66, and Igbinovia was decided by two tiebreakers that were both won by van der Merwe to hand Lee the team win.

Quinn Groenendijk beat Nuutti Jokinen 6-3 and 7-6 with a tiebreaker score of 7-3 in the second set. Yike Liu raced past Bonev 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. Krohn held off Tapia 10-8 in a superset tiebreaker to complete a come-from-behind win and complete the team sweep.

The Flames return home on Sunday to take on Mississippi College. The GSC contest is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.

Coach Patric Hynes' Thoughts:
"It's not easy to win here, we had to fight back in a lot of matches. Proud of the guys and now we need to get ready for Mississippi College on Sunday."
