VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Lee University Men's Tennis team fell to Gulf South Conference leader and No. 3 ranked Valdosta State 4-1 Sunday at the VSU Tennis Complex. The Flames end the regular season at 11-3 overall and 6-3 in the GSC. Valdosta State (17-3, 8-1 GSC) finished their regular season on a seven-game winning streak.
The Blazers did well in singles with four wins over Lee. Valdosta's Christian Wedel defeated Quinn Groenendijk 6-3 in both sets. No. 6 Takeshi Taco defeated No. 65 Wihan van der Merwe 6-4 and 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Jan Skerbatis won against Lee' Filipe Krohn 7-6 and 6-2. Jordi Dasi lost to Jerome Iaconi in three sets with Dasi winning the second set 6-1 but losing the first and third sets 6-2.
In doubles, Lee was able to win two out of three matches. Francisco Faria and Krohn beat Rodrigo Carvalho and Luca Mack 6-4. The Groenendijk brothers, Mike and Quinn, defeated Taco and Xaveam Van Wijk 6-3. In the third doubles match, Lee fell short with VSU's Boruch Skierkier and Skerbatis getting a 6-4 win against Dasi and van der Merwe.
The Flames will enter the GSC Championship as the No. 4 seed and will face No. 5 Mississippi College in the Quarterfinal Round on April 27 at either Lagoon Park or O'Connor Tennis Center in Montgomery, Alabama. Match time is yet to be announced.
