CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Lee University men's tennis team welcomed Shorter University to the DeVos Tennis Center on Monday and handed the Hawks a 7-0 loss. The Flames improved to 2-0 and Shorter dropped to 0-1 for the season.
Wihan van der Merwe and Stefan Mos beat Carlos Tubio and Mario Molina-Mari 6-0 to begin doubles competition. Filipe Krohn and Jackson Vaughan shut out Agustin Yap and Frederico Roman 6-0 to secure the doubles point and put Lee up 1-0.
Quinn Groenendijk and Jip Langerhuizen completed the sweep with a 6-1 defeat of David Arrieta Gomez and Sebastian Gamaez.
The Flames went up 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 win by van der Merwe against Arrieta Gomez at No. 1 singles. Groenendijk beat Gamez 6-0 and 6-3 to push the Lee advantage to 3-0. Langerhuizen held off Roman 6-3, 7-5 to clinch the team victory for the Lee men.
Mos blanked Tubio at No. 4 singles to continue the Lee shutout attempt. Rytis Razminas silenced Yap 6-0, 6-3 at the fifth position and Vaughan completed the shutout with a 6-3, 6-2 score against Molina-Mari.
Lee is scheduled to return to the courts on Saturday, February 22, against Tusculum University. The non-conference competition is set for 1 p.m. at the DeVos Tennis Center.
