MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Lee University women's tennis team opened conference play with a 4-3 win over Christian Brothers University Saturday morning. The Lady Flames improved to 5-0 and 1-0 in the Gulf South Conference, while the Lady Bucs fell to 3-3, 0-2 GSC.
Ashleigh Simes and Aliyah Dwyer opened doubles action with a 6-2 defeat of Sofiya Zemtsova and Lucia Lucas. Maria Penalver Aguilo and Kanna Kobayakawa were 6-1 winners against Raheen Taranum and Valerie Newmann to secure the doubles point. Vitoria Maximiliano and Mirjana Ragastovac completed the doubles sweep with a 6-3 score against Neha Dandu and Fernanda Garcia Galvez.
CBU evened the team score when Garcia Galvez won by retirement against Maximiliano at No. 6 singles. Lee regained the lead with Simes' 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles against Zemtsova. Penalver Aguilo beat Lucas 6-2 and 6-1 to extend the Lee margin.
Neumann pulled CBU back to within one with a 6-4, 6-1 win against Dwyer at the fourth position. Kobayakawa took down Dandu 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 singles to clinch the team victory. CBU tightened the final margin with Taranum's 6-4, 6-3 win against Ragastovac at No. 3 singles.
The Lady Flames are scheduled to travel to Harrogate, Tennessee, for a battle with Lincoln Memorial University on Thursday, March 6. The non-conference match is set for a 2 p.m. start at the LMU Indoor Tennis Facility.
