Flames Downed 7-0 by No. 1 West Florida

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Lee University men's tennis team tasted defeat for the first time this season with a 7-0 loss to No. 1 University of West Florida Monday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center. The 25th-ranked Flames fell to 6-1 overall and 1-1 in the GSC, while the Argos improved their record to 14-1, 5-1 GSC.

UWF grabbed an early lead with a sweep of the doubles competition. Miguel Cabrera and Albin Ekenros beat Wihan van der Merwe and Stefan Mos 6-3 at No. 3 doubles. Diego Duran and Sebastian Rondon, ranked No. 4 in doubles, held off Quinn Groenendijk and Jip Langerhuizen 6-4 at No. 1 doubles. Tomas Leston and Sebastian Sotelo doubled-up Filipe Krohn and Jackson Vaughan 6-3 to complete the sweep.

Krohn was defeated 6-1, 6-2 by 35th-ranked Sotelo to begin the singles results. No. 11 Cabrera was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over van der Merwe at No. 1 singles. No. 10 Rondon clinched the team victory with matching 7-5 margins in both sets against Groenendijk.

Mos forced Ekenros to three sets at No. 5 singles. Ekenros won the first set 7-6 with a 7-4 tiebreaker. Mos won the second set 6-2 and Ekenros won the third set with a superset score of 10-4.

Brad Sy-A-Foek fell 6-2 and 6-1 to Leston at No. 6 singles. Duran, ranked No. 63, beat Langerhuizen 6-4, 6-4 in the fourth position.

The Flames have a short turnaround before hosting No. 3 Valdosta State University on Wednesday. The GSC contest is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
