CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The 25
th-ranked Lee University women's tennis team remained unbeaten with a 4-3 win over Young Harris College Sunday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center. The Lady Flames improved to 11-0 overall, while the Mountain Lions fell to 5-11.
The 50
th-ranked doubles team of Ashleigh Simes and Aliyah Dwyer handed Simone Mercier and Futaba Saito 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. Maria Penalver Aguilo and Kanna Kobayakawa beat Andreia Semeano and Callie Stanfield 6-2 to secure the doubles point for Lee. Mirjana Ragastovac and Vitoria Maximilliano doubled-up Holly Ashford and Maud Scholten 6-3 to complete the sweep.
Simes, No. 1 in singles, beat Scholten 6-1 and 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Penalver Aguilo was a 6-4, 6-3 winner against Mercier at No. 2 doubles. Ragastovac posted a 6-3, 6-1 win against Gomez at No. 3 singles to clinch the team victory.
Young Harris collected wins in the final three matches to tighten the final margin. Saito needed three sets to win against Dwyer. Dwyer won the first set 7-6 with a 7-4 tiebreaker. Saito claimed the second set 6-3 and won the super set tiebreaker 10-1.
Stanfield won in straight sets against Jasmine Ibegbulam at No. 6 singles. Semeano went to three sets to defeat Nicolette Fuhr at No. 5 singles. Semeano won the opening set 6-2 before Fuhr forced a third set by winning the second set with a 7-3 tiebreaker. Semeano won the super set tiebreaker 10-6.
The Lady Flames return GSC play on Friday with a trip to Auburn University at Montgomery. The match is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET at the AUM Tennis Complex.
