CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Lee University women's tennis team upset No. 2 University of North Georgia a 4-3 Saturday morning. The match was a part of the 2
nd Annual Scenic City College Tennis Spring Break Showcase at the Champions Club Tennis Complex at Rivermont Park.
The Lady Flames (7-0) victory over the Nighthawks (7-3) was the program's second win out of five matches with UNG. The other win came back in the 2005 season.
"What a win for our girls," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "Our highest win in program history and we really had to earn it. So many momentum swings throughout the day and the entire group just kept fighting, kept cheering, and stayed true to each other. Just so proud of what they did today. Denis and Nanda did an incredible job coaching on court. Just a complete team win."
North Georgia drew first blood with a 6-1 win by Renata Morales and Emily Bush against Jasmine Ibegbulam and Nicolette Fuhr at No. 3 doubles. Maria Penalver Aguilo and Kanna Kobayakawa evened the doubles score with a 6-2 defeat of Ashley Moinard and Vasilissa Kupriyanova at No. 2 doubles. Ashleigh Simes and Aliyah Dwyer outlasted Angelina Linnikova and Linn Goerdes 7-5 to clinch the doubles point for Lee.
Dwyer started doubles competition with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles against Kupriyanova. Kobayakawa posted matching set scores of 6-4 against Goerdes to put the Lady Flames ahead 3-0.
In a battle of top 10 players, No. 7 Linnikova edged No. 1 Simes to put the Nighthawks on the board. Linnikova won the first set with a 9-7 tiebreaker and completed the match with a 6-4 margin in the second set.
Morales needed three sets to beat Ibegbulam at No. 6 singles. Ibegbulam won the first set 6-4 and Morales forced a third set with a 6-0 score in the second. The third set needed a tiebreaker where Morales posted a 7-1 advantage to win.
Victoria Niox-Chateau shut out Fuhr 6-0 in the opening set of their No. 5 singles battle. Fuhr won the second set with a 7-4 tiebreaker to force a third set where Niox-Chateau won 6-4 to tie the team score 3-3, leaving the No. 2 singles match between Penalver Aguilo and Moinard as the deciding point.
Penalver Aguilo claimed the first set 6-4 and Moinard posted the same score to win the second set. In the third set, Penalver Aguilo went up 3-0 before Moinard won four straight games to go up 4-3. Penalver Aguilo reversed the momentum and claimed the next three games to win 6-4 and clinch the team victory.
"Maria is having a great season already, but to come through under so much pressure was something that she fully deserves," added Hynes. "She works so hard on all facets of her game and is such a team player."
The Lady Flames return to action next Saturday against West Florida, currently ranked No. 18. The GSC contest is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the DeVos Tennis Center.
