Flames Fall 4-1 To West Florida In GSC Semifinal

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The No. 18 Lee University men's tennis team fell 4-1 to No. 1 West Florida in the semifinal round of the Gulf South Conference Championship Friday afternoon at Lagoon Park. The third-seeded Flames (14-3) claimed two of the three doubles matches before the No. 2 seed Argonauts (23-1) snagged the first four completed singles matches to record the win.

UWF took an early advantage in doubles with a win at the third position. Miguel Cabrera and Bernardo Costa beat Rytis Razminas and Wihan van der Merwe 6-2. Quinn Groenendijk and Jip Langerhuizen, ranked No. 14, defeated the No. 1 ranked doubles team of Diego Duran and Sebastian Rondon 6-4 at No. 1 doubles. Filipe Krohn and Stefan Mos posted a 7-5 tiebreaker to secure the doubles point with a 7-6 score against 44th-ranked Tomas Leston and Sebastian Sotelo.

Duran, ranked No. 40, opened singles competition with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Langerhuizen at No. 4 singles. No. 9 Rondon beat Groenendijk 6-1 in their first set and used a 7-2 tiebreaker to complete the two-set win with a 7-6 margin in the second set.

Leston continued UWF's momentum with a 6-4, 6-3 win against Razminas at the sixth position. In a battle of ranked opponents, No. 7 Cabrera beat No. 52 van der Merwe 6-3 and 6-2 to clinch the team victory.

The No. 3 and No. 5 singles matches were left unfinished. Krohn had won his opening set against No. 32 Sotelo 7-6 with a 7-4 tiebreaker and was trailing 2-0 in the second set. Mos and Albin Ekenros split the first two sets of their No. 5 singles match and Mos led 1-0 in the third set.

The Flames will now wait until May 5 to find out if they are one of the eight teams to advance to the 2025 NCAA Division II South Region Championship. Lee was ranked No. 5 in this week's South Region ranking prior to the GSC Championship. There will be another region ranking released on April 30.
