CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Lee University men's tennis team posted its sixth consecutive win with a 6-1 defeat of University of West Alabama Saturday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center. The No. 22 Flames improved to 12-2 overall and 5-2 in conference play while the Tigers dropped to 6-9 and 2-4 against GSC opponents.
The Flames recognized their senior members in a ceremony prior to the match. Those honored were Wihan van der Merwe and Jackson Vaughan.
Quinn Groenendijk and Jip Langerhuizen, ranked No. 23, opened the doubles competition with a 6-1 win over Afonso Portugal and Tomas Almeida at the top position. Rytis Razminas and van der Merwe doubled-up Vilislav Bonev and Eita Ishikawa 6-3 at No. 3 doubles to secure the doubles point for Lee. Filipe Krohn and Stefan Mos outlasted Jacob Tapia and Sebastiao Vilas 7-5 at No. 2 doubles for the sweep.
Krohn posted matching set scores of 6-2 to take down No. 74 Ishikawa at No. 3 singles. No. 47 van der Merwe beat Portugal 6-2 and 6-1 at No. 1 singles to push the Lee advantage to 3-0. Mos beat Bonev 6-1 and 6-1 in their No. 5 singles match to clinch the team victory.
Langerhuizen battled Almeida at No. 4 singles and came away with a 6-4, 6-1 win.
Tapia ended Lee's shutout hopes with a three-set win at No. 2 singles. Groenendijk won the first set 6-2 and Tapia claimed the second set 7-6 with a 7-3 tiebreaker. Tapia completed the comeback win with a 6-2 margin in the third set.
Razminas supplied the final team score with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Vilas at the sixth position.
The Flames travel to Clinton, Mississippi, on Saturday for their final regular season contest against Mississippi College. The GSC battle is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET at the MC Tennis Complex.
