No. 8 Lady Flames Handed First Loss By No. 16 West Alabama

Four Lady Flames Honored During Senior Day Ceremony

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Lee University women's tennis team tasted defeat for the first time this season with a 5-2 Gulf South Conference loss to No. 16 University of West Alabama Saturday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center. The No. 8 Lady Flames dropped to 13-1 overall and 6-1 in conference play while the Tigers improved to 10-4 and 5-0 against GSC opponents.

The Lady Flames recognized their senior members in a ceremony prior to the match. Those honored were: Ashleigh Simes, Maria Penalver Aguilo, Mirjana Ragastovac and Kanna Kobayakawa.

West Alabama claimed the doubles point with a sweep of the three matches. The No. 1 team of Shaira Rivera and Valentina Mutilba beat 50th-ranked team of Simes and Aliyah Dwyer 6-2. Greta Zawels and Lolita Hukasian were 7-5 winners against Ragastovac and Vitoria Maximiliano. Alexa Milliam and Emiri Takanishi held off Penalver Aguilo and Kobayakawa 7-5 at No. 2 doubles.

Dwyer recorded a three-set win at No. 3 singles to even the team score at 1-1. Mutilba won the first set of their No. 3 singles match 6-4 before Dwyer responded with 6-0 and 6-2 scores in the next two sets for the win.

Penalver Aguilo won her first set with No. 37 Milliam 6-1, but the visitor won the next two sets 6-3 and 6-1 to put UWA back in the lead. Simes, ranked No. 1, dropped her first set with No. 25 Rivera 7-6 following a 7-5 tiebreaker. Simes fought back to edge Rivera 7-5 in the second set and held on 6-4 in the third set to complete the comeback win.

Hukasian won 6-1, 6-0 against Kobayakawa at No. 5 singles to give UWA a 3-2 advantage. Takanishi clinched the team contest with a three-set win against Ragastovac. Takanishi used a 7-3 tiebreaker to win the first set 7-6 and Ragastovac forced a third set with a 7-2 tiebreaker in the second set. In the third set, Takanishi outscored Ragastovac 6-2 to garner the win.

Zawels supplied the final margin with a three-set win at No. 6 singles against Maximiliano. Maximiliano won the first set with a 7-5 tiebreaker and Zawels grabbed the second set 6-4. In the super set tiebreaker, Zawels beat Maximiliano 10-4 for the win.

The Lady Flames travel to Clinton, Mississippi, on Saturday for their final regular season contest against Mississippi College. The GSC battle is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET at the MC Tennis Complex.
