HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville scored a goal in each half and held the 13th-ranked Lee University women's soccer team scoreless for the first time this season in posting a 2-0 victory over the Lady Flames at Charger Park on Friday evening.
The defeat dropped Lee to 2-1-1 overall and 0-1 as they began GSC play. The Chargers improved to 3-1-1, 1-0. The Lady Flames will continue their road adventures on Sunday when they travel to Livingston, Ala. and face the University of West Alabama in a GSC contest slated for a 2 p.m. first kick.
After a 30-minute weather delay, the host UAH team got on the board in the 8th minute of play (8:42) on a goal by Michella Tortelli. The assist was recorded by Tarentino Campbell. The only other score of the contest came in the 55th minute (55:15) of the second half. Adriana Rojas tallied the goal and picked up the assist from Jayla Gillespie.
From the looks of the scoring, it would appear that the Lady Flames had enough opportunities to put numbers on the board. They fired 17 shots but placed only five on goal. On the other hand, the Chargers only took four shots the entire evening but three were on target and two went into the back of the net.
Cece Szopa was steady in net all evening for UAH. She registered five saves. Lee's Abby Whitcomb gave up a pair of goals and picked up one save. Another interesting stat showed the host having no corner kicks while Lee had 10.
Avery Sides and Ava Smith had two shots each on goal for Lee while Isabella Valentine placed the other shot on target.
The Lady Flames fired five shots in the first half and again the Chargers made good on the only shot they took. Lee was called for eight fouls and UAH five.
Coach Lee Hughes' thoughts:
"Credit to UAH, they played a good game. We created enough chances to get back in the game, but we never got out of second gear tonight! We will learn from tonight and be better for it!"
