Flames Late Rally Comes Up Short Against UWA

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - It was a hard-fought match between the Lee University Flames men's soccer team and the University of West Alabama Tigers tonight in Livingston. The Tigers defeated the Flames 2-1 in the match. With the loss the Flames fell to 3-3 overall and 0-2 in Gulf South Conference action. UWA improved to 2-2-1 overall and 2-0 in GSC action.

David Nunez of West Alabama had an outstanding performance, starting the Tigers off strong with the first goal of the game early in the first half. Shortly after, he scored West Alabama's second goal of the game, and his fifth on the season, just before the 16-minute mark of the first half, putting the Tigers ahead 2-0.
Lee started making a comeback with about 4 minutes remaining in the first half, with a goal by senior forward, Daniel Garvilla. Unfortunately, the Flames fell short, with both teams remaining scoreless in the second half, as the Tigers reeled in their 2nd conference win of the season.

Both teams had ten shots in the contest and four cards were issued. UWA had a yellow card while Lee had two yellow and a red.

The Flames are back in action this Friday, September 26th, at home to take on the University of Montevallo at 7:30 PM.

Coach Derek Potteiger's Thoughts:

"That was obviously not how we expected to start the GSC season, but it's clear that every game is going to be a battle. Unfortunately our problem was that we have some players that were not up for the fight this weekend, and so that is probably one of the most disappointing weekends I have had in the GSC.  We've had to deal with a good number of injuries this preseason, and early on in the regular season, and so that has hampered our ability to build any fluidity in the group; but injuries will always be a part of the game and that just means the group needs to fight harder, not go into a shell. It doesn't get any easier from here, so we need to regroup, do some soul searching and find a way to be at our best."
